Is there any reason to think that's not Dan DeCarlo?
I'm no authority on DeCarlo's work or Archies in general. Anyone out there know for sure? DeCarlo created Josie and the Pussycats, didn't he? This was a favorite cartoon of mine when I was a kid.
I'm pretty sure (like 95%) that that particular cover is by Stan Goldberg
That is definitely Stan Goldberg's style: that side face view, that shape to Melody's hair, that "slant" you get in some figures (look at Josie), those arms and hand positions ...
The second version is the one that I am more interested in reading, I mean Holy Shit!
Joe C. and shadzane -I found Stan Goldberg's website and asked him if he could confirm or deny that it was him. Hopefully I'll hear back soon and the mystery will be solved.
I heard back from Stan Goldberg and he confirmed that it is indeed him. Thanks to Stan and the commenters for figuring this out. If this was 1980 and you were reading the Covered Fanzine that I copied with a mimeograph machine and mailed out to you (while wearing fringe leather fantasy boots) this whole process would have taken 6 months. I love the internet.
